Although there are various types of randomisation such as urn randomisation, permuted block randomisation, minimisation randomisation etc, the RCT Builder is based on the simplest form of randomisation which is the coin flip randomisation. The computer randomly generates a number between 0 and 1, and assigns the patient to treatment if the number if less than 0.5 and to control otherwise.

If there are three allocation options, the same procedure is followed: the computer generates a random number between 0 and 1, and assigns the patient to each group if the number is less than 0.33, between 0.34 and 0.66 and more than 0.67 respectively.

A similar technique is applied when more than 3 allocation options are selected.
